On the whole, your average weekend sports fan is never going to make a living from betting on sports. Firstly, they don't take betting all that seriously, as it's just a fun part of the whole sporting experience. Then there's the fact that they make the mistake of assuming their sporting knowledge is going to help them win bets. To a degree, sporting knowledge is essential. But equally important is a deep understanding of the betting formats, odds and strategies. Without these, you can't win.

To be truthful, your average sports bettor is not someone who takes the betting as seriously as someone who's a professional gambler. For the weekend gambler, having a punt on a horse or on a game is nothing more than a bit of fun with their mates. Winning or losing isn't important, just taking part. Nevertheless, there are ways in which the novice gambler can throw away his entire bankroll within a couple of betting rounds. This normally comes down to some terrible sports betting habits.
