Every year, all over Iberia, a national event takes place. On the 22nd of December, the draw for the El Gordo lottery takes place. It's watched by virtually every Spaniard, plus countless ticket buyers from all around the world. The odds of this lottery are excellent and so the chances of winning, either the main prize or some of the secondary prizes, is very good. Technically, a single ticket costs a whopping €200, but tickets are sold by dividing them into tenths called “décimos”, at €20 each.

When you buy a lottery ticket, you're really just buying into a dream. That's because the chances of winning are so tiny, as to not be realistic. Some people buy their tickets and then forget about them. Others are more serious. They purchase tickets based on superstitious numbers or have a strategy or scheme which they hope will bring them the win. Unfortunately, there's really nothing you can do to improve your odds of being the winner. Yes, you could buy more tickets, but you'd need a lot.
