Semi-Bluffs in Poker: What They Are and How to Win Them

Even if you’ve never played poker, you will of heard the term “bluff” used about the game. It’s really a mind game whereby one player tries to convince another that he has a better hand. That is, better than it is in reality. The main point of bluffing is to convince the other player of the pointlessness of them continuing, and getting them to fold rather than play on. Of course, a bad bluff can backfire and will often mean that you’ll lose. Then there’s the semi-bluff. This is a bluff that’s also combined with a good jackpot poker strategy. The effect is the same in that you want the competition to fold.

But what is a semi-bluff?

With a semi-bluff, you’re going to make a bet even when you don’t actually possess a winning hand. For example, if you have only four of the cards needed for a flush or a straight, but you non less go ahead and make the bet as if you really have a great hand. It’s a bluff on account of the fact that you don’t have a good hand. But only a semi-bluff because there’s a chance that your hand will improve soon enough to make you a winner.

When to Semi-Bluff

This article will be dealing with semi-bluffing. If you have made the decision to raise post-flop or are hoping to fill out a straight or a flush because you have a taller stack of chips, then you’ll be needing the traditional bluff. Between a bluff and a semi-bluff, there are different sets of rules governing the game-play. Check out our poker guide for more information. The following will be dealing with raising when you’re semi-bluffing.

Poker Game and Poker Chips

As to when is the perfect time to semi-bluff, well there are a couple of factors that will decide that. These are table positions and the strength of your hand. Looking first at table position, it’s always better if you’re what called in “the position”. This is poker slang for being the last person to bet in a round, or near the end of the active players. By being in position, you can acquire more information about the other players and act on it accordingly. If you’re about to semi-bluff and suddenly everyone at the table starts to bet aggressively, then you’ll have time to change your mind and check or fold. Conversely, if the other players are betting very conservatory, then your semi-bluff has a better chance of being a success.

As to the second point, please take the time to properly analyze the odds of winning before you consider the semi-bluff. For example, if you’re drawing for an inside straight, then your odds of winning the hand are much worse than if you’re working towards a flush draw. Also keep in mind that if you have a pair, even if it’s not a top tier pair, your chances of winning the hand are going to be higher than if you had nothing. This is another means of how to win the jackpot.

Look At The Pot Odds

The next point is to determine the “pot odds”. You do this by comparing your odds to the overall size of the pot. Essentially it’s the ratio of your winning odds compared to the size of the pot. For example, if you reckon on having a 10% chance of winning and the pot is of $100, then your pot odds are 10-1. Following on, if you guess that you have a 50% chance of winning a pot of $100, then the pot odds increase to 2-1. So, with this in mind, remember that you really only want to semi-bluff when the pot odds are in your favor.

On a similar point, don’t semi-bluff with more than 5-1 odds. Or, to put it another way, don’t semi-bluff if you have less than a 20% chance of winning. A lot will come down to your own risk tolerance. In a game like Texas Hold’em, you’ll need to see when it’s the best time for a semi-bluff. See what’s coming up on the table. On the whole, it’s always better to semi-bluff earlier in the game as opposed to later. Remember that with each new card your chances of winning get less and less. At the same time, the risk get greater and greater.

When Not to Semi-Bluff

Of all the situations when you shouldn’t consider semi-bluffing, then not being “in the position” is probably the primary one to look out for. It goes without saying, that if you’re betting first, then you’ll lack the necessary information for a reliable semi-bluff. Likewise, if the pot odds are against you, then that’s not the time for a semi-bluff. Keep in mind that the semi-bluff is more or less the same as a bluff, in that you don’t have the cards to win the hand. If the odds are really stacking up against you, then refrain from semi-bluffing. That is unless you’re feeling generous and want to give all your hard-earned chips to another player.

If you want semi-bluffing to work for you, then you’ll need to be shrewd at reading the other players. You need to have an idea of how they’ll react to your semi-bluff. You’ll need to be pretty sure as to who’s going to fold, or who’s going to let you win. If they are aggressive types, they might just throw a spanner in the works. For no other reason other than forcing you to call. If that were to happen, then you’d have no winning cards and fewer chips. So read the table well. Because if your bet gets called, then it’s all over for you.

Semi-Bluffs in Poker: Making Money

Using semi-bluffing there are really two ways of making money and increase your jackpot winning chances. The common scenario is to get your opponents to make the call. This will steadily increase the size of the pot. If you continue betting in these later rounds, and in particular in a very aggressive manner, then you should be able to get all the players to fold their hands more or less at once. The second method occurs when you pick up the very card you’re missing to complete you straight or flush. Make sure that you’re betting accordingly. Of course, if your a good actor, then you could bluff that you’ve just pulled out a winning card.

Conclusion: Semi-Bluffs in Poker
