Powerball Man Claims $500K Just in Time
On Saturday 21st August, the $90 million Powerball jackpot prize remained unclaimed. That’s no surprise in a state that now offers three draws per week. According to the latest lottery news, around 47 separate states have signed up for this new schedule, which will now include a Monday night draw. That’s a nice $946.7 million increase from the preceding year. The largest sales draw was in January which saw over $239.7 million in ticket sales. $500K Winner Claims Prize 364 Days After Drawing
Probably the oddest story from last year’s Powerball comes from a lucky player who certainly took his sweet time to claim the prize of half a million dollars. The player took part in a drawing on August 19th 2020. But he left the reclaim for almost a year, which is when the ticket would have expired. In fact, he appeared at the Massachusetts State Lottery Corp. headquarters with just hours to spare until the deadline. Leonard Thomas of South Dennis bought with him the winning ticket for his $500,000 prize. He certainly knew how to win the jackpot with a style.
The Winning Numbers
Thomas managed to match 4 of the 5 regular numbers as well as the Powerball via a quick pick. Normally, that would earn you around $50,000. But Thomas splashed out the grand sum of an extra $1 for a Power Play. This acts as a multiplier for non-jackpot winnings. As a result, his winnings were multiplied by a factor of 10 times the original result. Apparently, he heard about the expiring ticket on the car radio, and also from his nephew.
Lucky Gas Station
He bought the ticket from a Mobile gas station. “I play at that store and have a plastic sleeve that I keep my tickets in,” Thomas said. “When I heard about the expiring ticket, I looked through the tickets in the sleeve and found a Powerball ticket from August 19, 2020. I had it scanned at a convenience store. And the clerk indicated that I had to go to the Lottery to claim the prize.”
As for what to do with his prize, Thomas said that he didn’t want his life to change. But he would buy a year-round cottage or house. Lottery news now says that had he missed the final deadline for the ticket, then those winnings would go towards the lottery profits around the state’s 351 cities and towns.
