Las Vegas Travels: Don’t Pay Face Value for Show Tickets
Las Vegas is a city built in a desert. It can only exist there, thanks to a couple of important factors. The first is air conditioning, without which everyone would bake to death. The second is the working poor. That’s right, almost everyone you’ll have contact with during your stay is earning less than what we would consider a minimum wage in Europe. And this leads to an unfortunate fact about what you’ll experience throughout Sin City. And that is, that almost everyone is determined to rip you off. Going to a show at a large casino will be a great way to illustrate this point.
As we’re sure you already know, many famous and not so famous stars get contracts to perform at the various large casino venues. If you go to the ticket office to buy a couple of seats for you and your significant other, you’ll be told some bullshit story about the show being sold out. They will go up and down the garden path with a story of how it’s the last night or the only night for this show, or how a group of Japanese tourist has bought out every ticket for the foreseeable future….you get the picture. You’ll end up paying hugely over the odds and when you take your seat you’ll see over half of the theater is empty.
The Tired Watching the Bored
Without a doubt, it’s a total con job. And it’s very difficult to escape from and find tickets at a normal/regular price, as everyone at the casino is involved with this scam. You can try and book your tickets early, say when you book your hotel before embarking on your Las Vegas travels, but the chances are that you’ll still be fed the same story. Even getting a player’s card at the casino desk, in the hope of getting at least a discount as a comp, will be difficult. And, to be absolutely truthful, most of the shows are crap. Because the performers are booked for months on end, performing two or three shows per day, six days a week, to almost empty theaters, they appear dead-eyed, going through the motions without any excitement or panache. As a result, they come across as soulless and empty. And that’s another reason we certainly wouldn’t recommend paying full price.
Las Vegas Travels: Don’t Think You Can Walk Everywhere
When you look at photos of the Las Vegas Strip, most are shot with a long lens in order to compress the perspective and get more casinos into the picture. But this compression gives a false picture as far as distance is concerned. The Strip itself is actually 4.2 miles in length. Or around 7,000 steps. That’s quite a walk. On the other hand, considering that you’re probably going to be stuffing yourself like a fatted pig, three times a day at one of the mega-buffets, it’s probably no bad thing for you to walk everywhere. The thing to keep in mind is that, though this distance doesn’t appear to be so great, you still have a huge amount of footwork to do once you enter any of these casinos. They are absolutely massive, and even the most basic exploring will have you tired out before you even start gambling in earnest.
So, as time is of the essence here, we suggest that you allay yourself of the available transportation. There are pedicabs, taxi-cabs, ride-shares, and of course, the Las Vegas monorail.
To get a taxi, ask the bellhop or the doorman at the casino or hotel where you’re staying. All Las Vegas taxis are familiar with shuttling players around to different casinos. If you’re going with either Uber or Lyft then make sure you keep your phone charged. You can also go for cruise casinos, but that gets a bit harder since you’re a bit away from the ocean.
Don’t Take Photos on the Casino Floor
In the present age of social media, we can totally understand that you want a photo of yourself standing in jackpot slots in a mega Las Vegas casino. Or you want to take a photo of your friends as the gamble. But this is a big no-no in all casinos. There are a couple of reasons. The first is to do with the casino’s security. There is always a concern, that by taking photos of the games rooms, you’ll be able to study them later to get a better understanding of how the casino’s own security works. This knowledge could be put to use on another visit to the casino. The second reason is that there’s a distinct possibility you might have another guest within your photo.
In other words, it’s to protect the privacy of other punters. If you do try and take a photo, then you’ll be asked to leave pretty quickly.
Don’t Go to Vegas without a Budget for Gambling
This is one of the most painful mistakes we see with new punters going off on their Las Vegas travels. Nothing is going to ensure you have a miserable time than running out of funds within your first few days. Look at your travel costs first. Then the cost of the hotel, meals, and tips. And only then look at how much you’ll have leftover for gambling. We suggest that you take this last amount to Vegas and put it in the safe in your hotel room. Then you simply remove your daily gambling allowance from the safe each morning or evening before setting off for the casino. Once it’s all gone playing jackpot games, then the day at the casino is over and you’re done with gambling.
If you happen to reach your daily limit during gameplay, then you still need to step out and call it a day. Once the funds are gone, then please don’t fall to the temptation of going to the in-casino cash machine. By doing so, you would be technically falling for the Gambler’s Fallacy. This means that when you’re experiencing a losing streak, you think that, by continuing playing, you’ll break even or get ahead of your losses. But big comebacks are a thing of the movies, not real life. So go off and do some of any other activities on offer in the city, that don’t involve gambling.
Las Vegas Travels: Don’t Be Rude
OK…this shouldn’t just apply to your Las Vegas travels. This should be one of the most basic mantras by which we live. But the sheer number of times we’ve witnessed customers being arrogant and rude to casino, restaurant, and hotel staff is shameful. Thankfully, rude people can be kicked out, as their bad behavior can affect the concentration of others. We understand that you’re in Vegas for a good time, to party and enjoy yourself. Here are some basic pointers as to etiquette in and around the casino.
If you don’t like the outcome of a game, please don’t raise your voice or start shouting. No one cares!
If you’re unsure as to whether you should tip, then assume that you should.
Please follow casino etiquette. Learn the rules of the games before you start to play.
Be sure to check if there’s a dress code at the particular venue of interest. Many places will turn you away at the door if you don’t sport the correct attire.
Being socially inappropriate will also cost you your seat at the gaming table. So no loud farting or belching.
Don’t Go Overboard with Free Drinks
Everyone knows that by gambling in a casino in Las Vegas, you’re gonna get free drinks. It’s one of the perks of your Las Vegas travels. Well, it’s not quite that simple. Your drinks come courtesy of the casino itself. And they only give them out for free depending on your spending habits. You should look at them as drinks you are paying for with your losses. And then, on top of that, you have to tip the waitress! OK…maybe that’s taking the stuffing out of the fantasy. But never the less, it’s a nice touch to be getting a drinks service directly to you as you gamble. But keep please do a check on your alcohol consumption.
In truth, the drinks they serve are so watered down, you’d have a hard time getting drunk after consuming for a week non stop. But, keep in mind that the drinks are not really about you. Nope, sir! It’s a means whereby the casino can get you to spend more. A tipsy player is going to be making bad decisions. And it’s those that the casino likes most of all. Las Vegas exists to take money from people. That’s it’s the sole purpose. Remember this salient fact in everything you do there. We suggest that you never mix alcohol or drugs with any form of gambling, as that’s not going to increase your jackpot winning chances.
